Technical Diver Training - Course Descriptions

Intro to Technical Diving - Tech Fundamentals

This program is designed to give divers the opportunity to improve their skills, knowledge and equipment configuration, thereby increasing their safety and efficiency.

  • Technical Diver Training - Commercial Diving Academy• The class allows recreational divers to increase their confidence and skills under the watchful eye of a Commercial Diving Academy Tech instructor. It will help prepare them for the rigors of tech training, should they decide to continue on with these demanding courses. By utilizing streamlined and efficient equipment configurations, divers will have the freedom to improve their skills.
  • • These divers will be more skilled, aware and responsible, allowing them to have more fun and safer dives. Improving non-technical skills and techniques and building diver confidence are the goals of the program. Correcting bad habits and mastering skills and techniques builds a solid foundation for divers to continue on with more advanced training.
  • • Due to the short length of the program, students should understand that these skills might not be able to be mastered without practice outside of the program. They will be shown the skill level they will need to attain and given an opportunity to practice with the instructor. Every effort will be made to ensure students develop the skill level to reach their potential.

Skills which will be concentrated upon include, but are not limited to:

  • Precision trim and buoyancy control.
  • Diver awareness.
  • Streamlined equipment configuration.
  • Improving kicks.
  • Dive planning.
  • Communication techniques.
  • Risk assessment.

Prerequisites:
1. 18 years of age
2. Complete all Commercial Diving Academy paperwork
3. Open Water Certification by a nationally recognized agency
4. 25 logged open water dives
5. Meet swim requirements for Commercial Diving Academy Scuba Diver
6. Good physical condition
7. Non-smoker (highly recommended)

Helitrox Diver

This unique course trains divers to helium-based gas mixes to make no-decompression dives as deep as 40 m/130 ft — without the level of narcosis encountered if making the same dives on air or Nitrox. These dive can be made using what is largely standard recreational scuba equipment and do not require much of the highly specialized equipment associated with other forms of technical diving.

  • Normoxic Trimix is a form of Trimix (nitrogen + helium + oxygen) in which the concentration of oxygen (21 percent) is the same as in normal air.
  • Helitrox is a form of Trimix in which — like Nitrox — the concentration of oxygen is greater than it is in normal air

This course may also be taken in conjunction with the Commercial Diving Academy Technical Diver course.

Number of dives: 4

Prerequisites:
1. 18 years of age
2. Complete all Commercial Diving Academy paperwork
3. Nitrox and Deep Dive certification
4. 50 logged open water dives
5. Meet swim requirements for Commercial Diving Academy Scuba Diver
6. Good physical condition
7. Non-smoker (highly recommended)

Technical Diver
This program is a combination of Technical EANX, Helitrox and DECO Techniques

Technical Diver Training - Commercial Academy

The Commercial Diving Academy Technical Diver Program is designed to introduce experienced advanced divers to the techniques and methods employed in diving beyond the traditional recreational limits. This course a combination of Technical EANX, Helitrox and DECO Techniques.  This combination allows for a logical progession avoiding any overlap and maximizing time.   It provides training in decompression techniques, the use of technical-enriched air nitrox and oxygen decompression gases, and the fundamentals of using oxygen-enriched helium-based mix gas (helitrox).

Candidates entering the program must already have mastered essential recreational diving skills, such as exact buoyancy control, dive planning protocols, teamwork and emergency management – the Intro to Tech Program.

Students enrolled in the Commercial Diving Academy Technical Diver Program will have the opportunity to cultivate these skills and many new ones while using more sophisticated designed for pursuing technical level diving.

Classroom work emphasizes decompression theory and management, diving physics and physiology, oxygen exposure management, equipment, dive planning and emergency procedures. Practical sessions include a minimum of 12 dives using nitrox or helitrox bottom gas and EAN50 or oxygen decompression gases from 70 and 20 fsw respectively. The training depths for these dives are 90 to 150 fsw.

This course prepares divers to use modern decompression theory and techniques to exceed the Recreational limits of scuba diving. Topics include:

  • Technical gear configuration.
  • Safety drills and practice.
  • Breathing gasses and physiology.
  • Modern decompression theory.
  • Team diving procedures.
  • Awareness and communication.
  • Contingency planning.
  • Contingency practice.
  • Stage deco practice and problem solving.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Oxygen toxicity.
  • Problem solving.

Prerequisites for the Commercial Diving Academy Technical Diver Program
• Minimum age of 21 years old
• Medical clearance and physically fit
• Nonsmoker
• Minimum of 50 logged dives in varying environments with at least 10 (beyond certification) using EANx.
• Certification and experience at the Commercial Diving Academy Master Diver, Intro to Technical, or equivalent. A reasonable amount of the candidate’s experience should include advanced recreational dives between 100 and 130 fsw.
• Certification and training in diver rescue, CPR, first aid and oxygen administration.

Trimix Diver Level I and 2

Technical Diver Training - Commercial Diving Academy

The Commercial Diving Academy Trimix program trains technical divers in the use of oxygen/helium/nitrogen gas mixtures (Tri Mix).  Students will be able to plan a deep dive utilizing the best choice in gas balancing the Maximum Operating Depth and Equivalent Air Depth to reduce you risk to potential hazards of deep diving. The two classes of Trimix - Normoix and Hypoxic will be utilized in planning your dives.

The Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM) will be utilized in planning all dives.  The modern dual phase approach to decompression theory allows divers to use the latest findings in planning safe decompression dives.

The academic presentation will emphasizes advanced decompression theory and management, gas mixing, diving physics and physiology, oxygen exposure management and dive planning.

Open Water session include rigorous review of fundamental skills, proper equipment selection and configuration, detailed dive team communications and emergency management.

Level 1 – 4 dives, two dives below 180’

Level 2 – Additional two dives below 200’

*Dives are to be in varied environment

Prerequisites for the Commercial Diving Academy Trimix Diver Program
• Minimum age of 21 years old
• Medical clearance and physically fit
• Nonsmoker
• Minimum of 100 logged dives in varying environments with at least 20
(beyond certification) decompression dives.
• Certification and experience at the Commercial Diving Academy Technical Diver Program.
• Certification and training in diver rescue, CPR, first aid and oxygen administration.
